Chandigarh : On the eve of World Diabetes Day, PGIMER’s Department of Endocrinology organized a successful screening camp and sensitization session at new OPD Complex which saw an impressive turnout, with over 100 participants, including patients, their attendants healthcare workers, and community members, who engaged in discussions about diabetes awareness, prevention, and management.
The event kicked off with a briefing on the significance of World Diabetes Day, observed globally on November 14.
According to the International Diabetes Federation, approximately 537 million adults worldwide are living with diabetes, and this number is projected to rise to 643 million by 2030. Over the years, diabetes has become a pressing public health issue that demands attention and proactive community initiatives.
Participants comprising mostly attendants of the patients received comprehensive consultations that included blood glucose level assessments, BMI measurements, and risk evaluations. Educational sessions centered around diabetes management strategies were conducted, focusing on the importance of lifestyle modifications, recognition of early symptoms, and preventive measures.
Dr. Sanjay Bhadada, Prof. & Headof the Department of Endocrinology and a renowned specialist in holistic care, emphasized the necessity of raising awareness: “Diabetes is not just a condition to live with; it is a lifestyle challenge that requires holistic and integrated management and education. Our aim is to empower individuals with knowledge, enabling them to make informed decisions about their health. The screening camp featured booths offering free consultations with endocrinologists and nutritionists, who provided personalized advice tailored to individual health conditions. Attendees were also given brochures and informative materials regarding the symptoms and complications of diabetes, along with tips for healthy living.
The event concluded with a commitment from the Department of Endocrinology to continue organizing awareness campaigns and screening activities aimed at educating the community about diabetes. As World Diabetes Day serves as a reminder of the continuous battle against this global epidemic, the Department remains dedicated to fostering a healthier, more informed society.
