Bengaluru/ PGIMER Faculty wins laurels at 63rd Annual Conference of NAMS

Bengaluru : National Academy of Medical Sciences (NAMS) honored Eight faculty members of PGIMER, icluding two former professors with prestigious NAMS fellowship at the 63rd Annual Conference NAMSCON-2023 held at Bengaluru.

Dr. Ratiram Sharma, Dr. Arun K Aggarwal, Dr. Sonu Goel, Dr. Surinder Rana, Dr. Arun Bansal, Dr. Naveen Kalra were awarded fellowship by Shri T.C. Gehlot, Honorable Governor of Karnataka. Union Health Minister of State Shri S.P. Singh Bhagel, Union Minister of Science and Technology Dr. Jitendra kumar and President NAMS Dr. S.K. Sarin was also present during august ceremony at Ramaiya Medical College, Bangalore. Besides this, Dr. Ram Samujh and Dr. Ramesh Sen, former Professors of PGIMER were also awarded fellowship.

National Academy of Medical Sciences (India) is a unique institution which fosters and utilizes academic excellence as its resource to meet medical and social goals. The NAMS accomplishes the process of encouragement and honour that should be given to the talented physicians and scientists among medical fraternity.

Dr. Rati Ram Sharma, Head, Department of Transfusion Medicine, PGIMER, Chandigarh awarded for his contribution in the field of Transfusion Medicine and development of the specialty of Transfusion Medicine course program in the institute and the country. He has significantly contributed for implementation of various blood safety programs of Government of India in the country, including the implementation of Hepatitis C screening program in the various blood banks in the country. His special area of interest and research has been Transfusion Medicine, Apheresis, Stem Cells & Cellular therapies.
Dr Sharma is member of Standing Academic Committee of International Society of Blood Transfusion and WHO group on blood regulation, availability & safety and initiated various blood safety initiatives with these organizations in the country. He has also provided exemplary services during the Covid 19 pandemic to meet the blood requirement of the patients in the institute and the region.

Dr Arun K Aggarwal, Professor and Head, Department of Community Medicine and School of Public Health, PGIMER, Chandigarh has significant contribution in the areas of Reproductive and Child Health, Verbal autopsy for CDR, MDR and Stillbirths, IMNCI, Nutrition, Anaemia and Iodine Deficiency Disorders, Implementation Research, Health Systems Research, Health Care Quality Assessment and Improvement. Gaining expertise in Artificial Intelligence, Digital Health, Health Administration. WHO fellow for Health financing, Australian Leadership Award for HIV and Sexual Health.
Dr. Sonu Goel, Professor at the Department of Community Medicine & School, PGIMER, Chandigarh received this coveted honour for his area of work in public health leadership and tobacco control at global level. As Director of International Public Health Management Development Program, he has collaborated with Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India and trained around 1100 senior professionals and policy makers from 85 countries in last 7 years and also received WHO Director General Award in 2022.

Dr. Naveen Kalra, Professor Department of Radio-diagnosis and Imaging, an interventional radiologist with special interest in hepatobiliary imaging and interventions. He is the pioneer in the country for starting image-guided minimally invasive treatment of liver cancers using cryoablation and irreversible electroporation. He is part of the consensus committees and member of the national task force on diagnosis and management of liver cancer. He is also the pioneer in the minimally invasive treatment of locally advanced gallbladder cancer. He has more than two hundred publications, several book chapters and presentations to his credit and has delivered several lectures in national and international conferences. National Academy of Medical Sciences awards the fellowship for academic excellence in the field of medicine. Dr Naveen is among the very few radiologists who have been bestowed this honor in the history of the National Academy of over 60 years.

Dr. Surinder S. Rana, Professor, Department of Gastroenterology, PGIMER, Chandigarh has more than 400 research publications in Therapeutic Endoscopy, Interventional Endoscopic Ultrasound and advanced ERCP. He has developed numerous innovative endoscopic and endoscopic ultrasound methods intended for the minimally invasive diagnosis and treatment of pancreatic diseases. He is recently awarded with Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) Amrut Mody Unichem Prize and Asian Pacific Digestive Week Federation and the Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology Foundation, (APDWF-JGHF).

Dr. Arun Bansal, Professor, Department of Pediatrics, PGIMER, Chandigarh received the honor for his contribution and active role in the pediatric intensive care area especially pneumonia. Dr. Arun Bansal has many fellowship and editorial board membership to his credit.
Dr. Ram Samujh, former Head of the Department of Pediatrics Surgery and Dr. Ramesh Sen, former Professor, Department of Orthopedics, PGIMER, Chandigarh were honoured for their accomplishment and significant role in their respective field.
